Announcing Startup Battlefield at Disrupt SF 2018

Every year, TechCrunch chooses an elite cohort of startups to compete in Startup Battlefield — TechCrunch’s premier global startup launch competition. This year’s selection was the most competitive in Startup Battlefield history and we’re excited for you to watch these innovative startups duke it out on the Main Stage at TechCrunch Disrupt SF 2018. Companies are competing for a $100,000 equity-free grand prize and the renowned Disrupt Cup.

These founders have made unprecedented advancements in their industries. From new-age designer vibrators and anti-facial recognition protection software to ovulation prediction kits and cannabinoid-producing bio-engineered yeast, our teams are breaking barriers across the board. With AI and deep machine learning on the docket, they are creating smart enterprise search functions, intelligent legal tech and even advanced hormone tracking for women’s health and wellness.

On Wednesday and Thursday, teams will have six minutes to pitch in front of a panel of esteemed judges and a live audience, followed by an intensive Q&A session. On Friday, a select number of companies will be chosen to compete for the grand prize in the final Startup Battlefield round, with a brand new set of judges.

Last day for Disrupt SF Virtual Hackathon submissions

If you’re still working on your submission to the first Virtual Hackathon at TechCrunch Disrupt San Francisco 2018 on September 5-7, then you’d best start praying to the caffeine gods and chug another Red Bull. The deadline you need to hit rolls in tonight, August 2 at midnight PST — no second chances on this one, folks. Give your coded creation a final round of tweaks and tests and then submit your hack right here.

Previous TechCrunch Hackathons lasted 24 hours, took place on-site, showcased incredible talent and generated some amazing winners, including:

  • Quick Insurance — the easiest way to purchase an insurance product for all your valuable stuff (Disrupt Berlin 2017)
  • Alexa Shop Assist — lets you ask Alexa where to find products in a store (Disrupt SF 2017)
  • reVIVE — a VR solution that provides both a diagnostic and treatment mechanism for ADHD (Disrupt NY 2017)

In this, our first, Virtual Hackathon, literally thousands of talented developers, programmers, hackers and tech makers from around the world have been hard at work since June to show how they’d creatively produce and apply technology to solve various challenges. We cannot wait to see what comes from their efforts.

Here’s how the judging works. We’ve recruited a top-notch panel of experts to review all eligible submitted hacks and rate them on a scale of 1-5. The 100 top-scoring teams each receive up to five Innovator Passes to TechCrunch Disrupt SF 2018.

Out of that group, the top 30 teams will enter the semi-finals and get to demo their hack at Disrupt SF next month. The judges then select the best 10 teams, and they will present and demo their product on The Next Stage. One team will be crowned the first TC Disrupt Virtual Hackathon champion and take home the $10,000 grand prize.

In a classic, “but wait, there’s more” moment, our sponsors have created some incredible challenge hacks, and they’ve put plenty of cash and prizes on the table. We’re talking contests sponsored by Sony Pictures, United Airlines, BYTON, TomTom, Viond, HERE Mobility and Amazon. Check out the full listing.

The first Virtual Hackathon goes down at TechCrunch Disrupt San Francisco 2018 on September 5-7. And if you want a shot at winning anything, you have only a few more hours — tonight, August 2 at midnight PST — to submit your hack. It’s time to get ‘er done!

Prices for Disrupt SF 2018 passes increase next week

It’s not easy for budget-conscious founders to part with cold, hard cash. Or for time-strapped investors to push a to-do item higher up the priority list. But do it you must if you plan to attend Disrupt San Francisco 2018 on September 5-7 (and if you aren’t planning to go, you have some splainin’ to do).

On July 25, the prices go up on passes to Disrupt SF 2018, and while these three program-packed days provide outstanding value at any price, there’s just no reason to pay more if you don’t have to. Go buy your passes today and — depending on the type of pass you purchase — you can save up to $1,200 for your trouble.

Let’s talk about experience and the content you can expect at Disrupt SF 2018. This huge, vibrant exhibit hall is the pulse of Disrupt and a veritable vortex of networking, collaboration and opportunity.

And when you’re exploring Startup Alley, don’t forget to swing by and check out the 50+ startups that earned a Tech Crunch Top Pick designation. We chose five companies to represent each of these 12 category tracks: AI, AR/VR, Blockchain, Biotech, Fintech, Gaming, Healthtech, Privacy/Security, Space, Mobility, Retail or Robotics. It’s a phenomenal cohort, indeed.

Of course, Disrupt events always feature tech glitterati, business titans, fearless founders and leading investors, and Disrupt SF 2018 is no exception. Our stellar roster of speakers includes, among many others, Sophia Amoruso, CEO, GirlBoss; Roelof Botha, partner, Sequoia Capital; and Drew Houston, co-founder and CEO, Dropbox. You can take a look at the full lineup of speakers here.

It’s not Disrupt without Startup Battlefield, the premier startup competition and hands-down the best platform from which to launch an early-stage company to the world. In keeping with the bigger, better, bolder nature of DSF ’18, we’ve doubled the prize money, and this year’s champion will claim $100,000 in non-equity cash. Startup Battlefield is always a wild ride, and given the stakes, you do not want to miss this one.

24 hours left to apply for Startup Battlefield at Disrupt SF ’18

This is it, the absolute last chance for the professional-grade procrastinators out there. It’s do-or-die time. If you’re an early-stage founder who dreams of launching your business to the world, you have 24 hours left to stop dreaming and take action. Get your keister in gear and apply to Startup Battlefield right now.

Startup Battlefield, the premier startup-pitch competition and the best platform for launching your company to the world, takes place at Disrupt San Francisco 2018 on September 5-7. This year we’re producing our biggest, boldest, most ambitious Disrupt ever, with three times the floor space, more than 10,000 attendees and more than 400 accredited media outlets.

Yeah, that’s a big deal, and we’ve doubled the Startup Battlefield prize to match this super-sized event: $100,000 (we’re talking equity-free cash, folks). Don’t pass up this opportunity to compete with the very best. Yes, it’s a competitive vetting process. TechCrunch editors will review all applications and select between 15-30 of the top early-stage startups. Our acceptance rate ranges from three to six percent. But hey, if you’ve got the stuff, it won’t matter. We’ll see it.

It won’t cost you a thing to compete or to participate, and every team gets free pitch coaching from our Startup Battlefield-tested TechCrunch editors. Each team gets six minutes on the Disrupt Main Stage to pitch their company to a panel of judges — consisting of well-known investors, entrepreneurs and technologists — and then answer any questions they may ask. The judges will choose five teams to enter a second and final round of pitching to a fresh team of judges.

That panel of judges determines the overall winner, who will claim the largest Startup Battlefield prize in TechCrunch history — along with the Disrupt Cup, bragging rights and an enormous amount of investor and media interest.

Every moment of Startup Battlefield takes place in front of a live audience numbering in the thousands, and it’s also live-streamed around the world (and available later on demand) on TechCrunch.com, YouTube, Facebook and Twitter. Every competing team receives an inordinate amount of exposure.

You’ll get even more exposure exhibiting in Startup Alley — our exhibition hall will showcase more than 1,200 early-stage startups — for all three days of the conference. It’s free for Startup Battlefield competitors, and it’s a huge networking opportunity.

And, of course, you can take advantage of Disrupt’s three content-packed days of exciting and inspiring tech programming, world-class speakers, Q&A Sessions, the Virtual Hackathon and world-class founder-to-investor networking made easy with the CrunchMatch platform.

So much potential. So many benefits. So little time left to apply. Disrupt San Francisco 2018 takes place on September 5-7 at Moscone Center West. You have just 24 hours left. Apply to Startup Battlefield right here.

Only two days left to apply to Startup Battlefield at Disrupt SF ’18

“Time Is on My Side” may be true for the Rolling Stones (seriously, Mick and the boys have defied time), but we’re here to tell you that time is most definitely not on your side if you want to compete in Startup Battlefield at Disrupt San Francisco 2018, which takes place September 5-7.

You have a mere two days left before the application window to Startup Battlefield — and your shot at winning $100,000 — slams shut. Drop whatever you’re doing and apply to Startup Battlefield right now.

Startup Battlefield is one of the tech industry’s leading startup pitch competitions and, without a doubt, it’s the best launching pad for early-stage startups. If you want to introduce your pre-Series A company to the world, attract investor interest and receive intense media coverage, Startup Battlefield delivers the goods.

True fact. Even if you don’t win, merely competing in Startup Battlefield can have a profound effect on your business. Don’t just take our word for it. Consider Riminder, an AI-based recruitment service, that participated in Disrupt NY 2017 but did not make the final cut. Don’t shed any tears, because the company just received a round of funding totaling $2.3 million.

The Startup Battlefield vetting process is highly competitive. Our discerning team of editors reviews each application and accepts between 15-30 startups to compete in the first round. The acceptance rate ranges from three to six percent.

The Startup Battlefield takes place live in front of an audience of thousands, including the aforementioned investors and media. It’s your time to shine. Don’t worry though, each team receives expert pitch coaching from seasoned TechCrunch editors. You’ll be ready to step onto the Disrupt Main Stage and knock the socks off our panel of judges, which consists of notable tech and VC industry experts.

Those judges will select approximately five teams to move to the finals and a second round of pitching. From that select cohort comes the grand-prize winner to claim bragging rights, the Disrupt cup and, yes, our biggest equity-free cash award ever: $100,000. Someone has to win the $100,000 prize, and it might very well be your company.

Let’s take a minute to talk about other benefits of competing in Startup Battlefield. Applying and participating doesn’t cost you a thing, and each team gets to exhibit in Startup Alley for all three days of the conference — for free. The Alley’s where you’ll join more than 1,200 early-stage startups showcasing their very best tech, products and talent. It’s one of the most inspiring networking opportunities going.

Compete in the Battlefield, and you also join the Startup Battlefield alumni community — which consists of more than 800 companies and has collectively raised more than $8 billion in funding and produced more than 100 exits. That’s another magical networking community. You might recognize a few names, like Mint, Dropbox, Yammer, Fitbit, Getaround and Cloudflare.

Disrupt San Francisco 2018 takes place on September 5-7 at Moscone Center West. You have 48 hours left to apply. You are not Mick Jagger. Time is not on your side. Apply to Startup Battlefield today.

Startup Battlefield application deadline extended by one week

Here’s a heartfelt gift for all you procrastinating early-stage startup founders who haven’t gotten your act together to apply to compete in Startup Battlefield at Disrupt San Francisco 2018 on September 5-7. You’re strapped for time, we get it. So, we’re extending the application deadline by one week.

You now have until June 13 — that’s seven days to collect your team and take your shot at winning $100,000. Yup, we doubled the prize money this year because we’re supersizing Disrupt SF. We’ve moved to Moscone Center West, which offers three times the floor space. That’ll make it much more comfortable for the more than 10,000 attendees, 1,200 exhibitors and more than 400 media outlets we expect to take in all that Disrupt has to offer.

Like, for example, Startup Battlefield — humanity’s best launching pad for early-stage startups. Seriously, winning this gig can have life-altering implications. Consider New York-based chore wizard Hello Alfred, which won Startup Battlefield at Disrupt SF back in 2014. The company — founded by Jessica Beck and Marcela Sapone — is ready to scale having just scored $40 million in a Series B round of funding. That’s what we call a good ROI.

In case you’re wondering how well other Battlefield competitors have fared, listen up. The Startup Battlefield alumni community consists of more than 800 companies and has collectively raised more than $8 billion in funding and produced more than 100 exits. You may recognize a few of them: Mint, Dropbox, Yammer, Fitbit, Getaround and Cloudflare. The networking opportunities alone make applying worth your time.

And let’s not forget all the press and investor interest. The competition takes place on the Disrupt Main Stage in front of a live audience that numbers in the thousands. The funding you seek is no doubt sitting in that audience. If you make the cut, experienced TechCrunch editors will coach you on the finer points of startup-pitching, so you’ll make the best impression possible.

We live-stream the entire event around the world on TechCrunch.com, YouTube, Facebook and Twitter. And it’ll be available later, on demand. Remember, applying and competing in Startup Battlefield is 100 percent free. Where else will you find media and investor exposure at that price?

Battlefield competitors also get to exhibit their company in Startup Alley for all three days of the show — for free. Remember all those attendees and media outlets? They spend a lot of time combing the Alley for the next big thing. Competing in the Battlefield is the gift that keeps on giving.

Disrupt San Francisco 2018 takes place on September 5-7 at Moscone Center West. You have one extra week to get your application to us. Don’t delay any longer. Apply to Startup Battlefield right now.

Launch with TechCrunch in the Startup Battlefield competition at Disrupt SF 2018

Hey, this message goes out to all you early-stage startup founders with the drive and determination to take your company all the way to the land of the unicorns. Now’s the time to apply to TechCrunch’s Startup Battlefield competition — the world’s best start-up pitch competition going down at Disrupt San Francisco 2018 on September 5-7. If you require incentive, consider this: we bumped the top prize this year to a very cool $100,000. That sure would help your bottom line, now wouldn’t it?

If you’re not tuned in to how Startup Battlefield works, we’ll break it down for you. Seasoned TechCrunch editors review all applications in a highly-competitive vetting process. How competitive? The acceptance rate ranges from 3 to 6 percent. Factors that influence the decision include the team, the product and the market potential. Anywhere from 15-30 pre-Series A startups will make the final cut. This is a good time to point out that competing in Startup Battlefield doesn’t cost a thing, and that TechCrunch does not charge startups any fees or take any equity.

All competing teams receive free expert pitch training from the Startup Battlefield team who, trust us, have seen it all when it comes to startup pitch competitions. You’ll be primed and ready for round one where you’ll deliver a six-minute pitch and demo to a panel of expert judges — and then answer any questions they may have. The cream of the crop — roughly five teams — will advance to round two for a repeat pitch performance in front of a fresh set of judges.

Every exciting, heart-pounding minute takes place in front of a live audience numbering in the thousands, and we live-stream it to the world on TechCrunch.com, YouTube, Facebook and Twitter. And it’ll be available later on-demand.

But the benefits of competing go far beyond winning the $100,000 cash prize. More than 400 media outlets will attend Disrupt SF’18, and an intense media spotlight will shine brightly on all Startup Battlefield contestants. Just making it into the initial Startup Battlefield cohort can draw significant investor interest. Aircall, a cloud-based call center solution, stands as a prime example.

The French startup competed in round one of Startup Battlefield SF 2015. It didn’t make the finals, but the company just received another round of funding to the tune of $29 million. Since its debut at Startup Battlefield three years ago, the company has gone on to raise a total of $40.5 million. Not too shabby for an “also-ran.”

All startups who compete will join the ranks of the Startup Battlefield alumni community. This impressive group of over 800 companies has collectively raised more than $8 billion in funding and produced more than 100 exits. Companies like Mint, Dropbox, Yammer, Fitbit, Getaround and Cloudflare — just to drop a few names. Networking as part of this community has its advantages.

So many reasons to apply, and we haven’t even talked about all the other fabulous happenings at Disrupt SF. More than 10,000 attendees will stream through Startup Alley, home to more than 1,200 of the best early-stage startups around. Twelve different tech tracks, four stages of unique programming, speakers, Q & A Sessions, after parties and world-class networking — made even easier with CrunchMatch, our curated investor-to-startup matching platform.

Disrupt San Francisco 2018 takes place on September 5-7 at Moscone Center West. Apply to Startup Battlefield. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Apply today for a Startup Alley Exhibitor Package at Disrupt SF ‘18

Every tech founder worth their title knows that investors, customers and media exposure form the life blood of every early-stage startup. And there’s no better way to place your startup in front of these three essential groups than to exhibit in Startup Alley at Disrupt San Francisco 2018. The conference takes place on September 5-7, but if you want to secure your spot you need to apply to purchase a Startup Alley Exhibitor Package before the application window closes.

Startup Alley at Disrupt SF ’18 will feature more than 1,200 highly vetted, early-stage startups showcasing the very latest in tech products, platforms and services spanning the tech spectrum. You can expect more than 10,000 attendees to pass through the Alley, including more than 400 media outlets.

Exhibit your company in the Alley’s energetic atmosphere of networking, collaboration and possibility. According to Crunchbase, Startup Alley exhibitors at Disrupt SF 2017 raised more than $37 million in seed and Series A funding within the four months following the conference.

The Startup Alley Exhibitor package includes a one-day 4’x6′ exhibit space, three Disrupt SF Founder passes (as long as you apply before July 25) and you get to use CrunchMatch — our curated investor-to-startup matching platform.

Plus, you can take advantage of the Startup Alley exhibitor lounge and receive access to the full Disrupt press list. Your company also will have the chance to be selected as a Wildcard entry to the Startup Battlefield pitch competition. Did we mention that we doubled this year’s prize to $100,000? Yeah, we did that.

The Startup Alley Exhibitor Package offers enormous value at $1,995. But here’s the thing — you can apply to exhibit in Startup Alley for free as a TC Top Pick. Here’s what you need to know:

Companies vying for a free TC Top Pick spot must fit in one of these 12 categories: AI, AR/VR, Blockchain, Biotech, Fintech, Gaming, Healthtech, Privacy/Security, Space, Mobility, Retail or Robotics.

TechCrunch editors will review every TC Top Pick application and select only five companies for each category. Each of the 60 companies receives one free Startup Alley Exhibitor Package and will also score sweet media coverage in the form of a recorded three-minute interview on the Startup Alley Showcase Stage — and TechCrunch will promote that video across its social media platforms.

Now pay close attention to these three deadlines. If you want to be considered for a TC Top Pick, you must apply by June 29. If you want your Startup Alley Exhibitor Package to include three Disrupt SF Founder passes, you must apply before July 25. And finally, the last-chance application deadline for a Startup Alley Exhibitor Package is August 8.

Disrupt San Francisco takes place on September 5-7, and you simply won’t find a better opportunity to showcase your early-stage startup to the most influential industry movers and shakers. One more thing. We believe in rewarding action, and early applicants will be eligible to score special offers, so apply today. We can’t wait to see you there!

Applications still open for Startup Battlefield at Disrupt SF ’18

Could your startup use $100,000? Then drop whatever you’re doing and apply to compete in Startup Battlefield while you still can. Applications are still open to qualifying companies — meaning you haven’t yet launched to the public and have received little to no press coverage. Startup Battlefield takes place at Disrupt San Francisco 2018 on September 5-7. Don’t miss out on your chance to introduce your company from the world’s biggest startup stage. Apply today.

This is no “ordinary” Disrupt SF. This is our biggest, most ambitious Disrupt ever and, this year, it’s the only Disrupt taking place in North America. That’s why we supersized the Startup Battlefield grand prize to $100,000 cash. And here’s more good news. TechCrunch does not take any fees or equity from Battlefield startups, and it doesn’t cost anything to apply or to participate in the competition.

Here’s a quick look at how Startup Battlefield works. Seasoned TechCrunch editors review each application and select approximately 20-30 companies in a highly competitive vetting process. TechCrunch selects contestants based on their team, product and market potential, and the acceptance rate is roughly three to six percent.

Each team receives free pitch coaching from the seasoned TechCrunch team and will be well-prepared to step onto the Disrupt Main Stage. In the preliminary round, teams get six minutes to pitch and demo their products to a panel of judges composed of TechCrunch editors, top VCs, technologists and entrepreneurs. After each pitch, judges follow up with a Q & A.

The judges then select six companies to move forward to a final pitch-off in front of a fresh set of judges — and a second set of follow-up questions. From the six comes one startup to claim the title of champion, win the vaunted Disrupt Cup and take home the largest grand prize in the history of TechCrunch Startup Battlefield.

The entire Battlefield takes place in front of a live audience of several thousand startup enthusiasts — including influential VCs, investors and media outlets (representing more than 400 outlets). We also live-stream the whole shebang around the world on TechCrunch.com, YouTube, Facebook and Twitter (and make it available later on demand).

Every Startup Battlefield contestant, regardless of the outcome, joins the ranks of the Startup Battlefield Alumni community. We’re talking almost 800 companies — including notables like Mint, Dropbox, Yammer, Fitbit, Getaround and Cloudflare. These alumni companies have collectively raised more than $8 billion in funding and produced more than 100 exits.

And in a classic “but wait, there’s more” moment, TechCrunch also provides free exhibit space in Startup Alley for all three days of Disrupt SF to all Battlefield contestants. Between the Battlefield competition exposure and exhibit time in Startup Alley, the networking possibilities are practically limitless.

Startup Battlefield takes place at Disrupt San Francisco 2018 on September 5-7. Applications to Startup Battlefield won’t be open much longer, so apply today. We can’t wait to see you there!
